How old were/are you kids when you allow them to play in an unfenced yard without constant supervision? Mine are 8, 5, and 3, and I'm finally allowing them to play in the front yard together with the neighborhood kids or with each other while I make dinner. They ride bikes on the sidewalk, and play with sticks and stones. I can peek at them occasionally.

I wouldn't let a single kid out there alone, but I was wondering if I should just hang a welcome sign up for child kidnappers and other bad guys, or if others think this playtime is probably fine.

Mine are still supervised at 4 (almost 5) and 2. The only reasons, though, are because we have a pond that hubby likes to shock with chlorine a lot and because we get scorpions and black widows in our yard.

scared

If that wasn't the case, I would toss them in the back yard and let them play their face off. Wink

8 and 5 on own , 3 depending on child if i would let them out with others , but probably not on own . i would be more worried about the child's ability to think before running on to road in front of cars than kid nappers . Especially cool if neighborhood kids are around , cos' they keep an eye on each other and learn skills from each other .

we live in the middle of no where and know our neighbours pretty well so I felt safe last summer letting my 2 and 4 year olds play outside with and without their friends around without me there every second. Mostly I just left the windows open and checked on them if I couldn't hear what they were doing. I would be paranoid anywhere with traffic though. I was a complete mess the entire time we spent in edmonton last year. I don't know what ages I'd be comfortable with then.

I'm gonna sound like a real estate agent and say it depends on "location, location, location."

Our house is surrounded by busy streets so I'm not comfortable with them playing by themselves or with friends...but to put it to perspective, my kiddos are 2, 4 and 6 yr olds...my opinion might change if I can "trust" (responsible, street smart, etc.) them when they are older...
